Nanaimo Area Director
Prior to receiving Christ in 1983, I was a troubled teenager from a broken family living a life of anger, drugs and sexual promiscuity but I encountered Christ who transformed me and empowered me to overcome my addictions. The healing I received enabled me to go back to school, marry and father four children as I served Jesus in His church. For several years, I served God as an elder and lay youth pastor while also running my own business in service, product and sales management within the automotive equipment industry in Ontario and BC. In time however, God moved my heart from serving Him in business to serving Him through reaching troubled teenagers. I have never been so excited about my faith than in these last few years while I’ve watched Jesus transition kids into His likeness.

I once was lost, but now I’m found. My lifestyle during my late teens/early twenties was one of drinking, drugs and girls. But, I was so empty inside and living with no purpose or direction. This lifestyle led me to overdosing 5 years ago which was a real wake up call. When I came out of that, I felt on my heart that I really needed to get to church. One of the first times at a church in Nanaimo, my girlfriend (who is now my wife) and I responded to the altar call and received Christ into our hearts. From that moment on everything began to change. Jesus delivered me of drugs, alcohol and pornography. Now I’m fully sold out for Jesus and burn with a passion to see others lit up with the same fire He’s given me. One of my favorite verses is Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation for those who believe, first to the Jew then to the Greek. For in it (the Gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed.” I’m driven by the Gospel, and my sole purpose in life is to become who He has created and called me to be so that when others see it, they will want what I have: the life of Jesus.

Since moving to Nanaimo to finish up my degree in Criminology, I felt a strong calling to work with troubled youth. I never saw myself working in this kind of environment because I never felt like I was able to relate to the struggles and difficulties they face on a daily basis. However, as time went on, God opened my eyes to see how broken and lost these kids are, looking for anything that will fill the emptiness in their lives. When I was approached by YFC Nanaimo to do my internship with them at the beginning of my final year at VIU, I was excited for the opportunity. Not only did it allow me to fulfill my requirement to graduate, it helped me to step into the call that God had placed on my heart the year before.Matthew 18:12-14 tells us to go after the lost sheep and to rejoice when they find their way back home. Now that I’ve completed my degree, my mission with YFC is to search for the lost and hurting and bring them to a life fulfilled with the hope and love of Jesus Christ.

By the grace of God, I survived my teenage years to reach my last year of university at 21 years old. This is when I became conscious of the Holy Spirit’s conviction on me of my unforgiven sins and my need to be made right with God. Attending a Christianity Explored course at my church was when I really began to understand my urgent need for salvation through Jesus. After one of these meetings, in the quietness of my bedroom, I repented to God, accepted His forgiveness through Christ, and asked Him to become my Lord as I surrendered my life to Him, and was born again into the family of God! Immediately I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders, as the Holy Spirit accepted my invitation and took up His eternal residence in me! Christ has journeyed with me for the past 13 years, where I’ve experienced His huge love, beautiful peace, and continual faithfulness in my life. He has instilled in me a calling and a passion to lead and serve young people, and has led me from my homeland of Ireland, all the way to Nanaimo! Volunteering and now working with YFC Nanaimo, has allowed me insight into the great need there is amongst the youth and their families in this city. Getting past the surface, and facing the hurt some of these young people are experiencing in their everyday lives, is heart-breaking. Broken families, rejection, poverty, lack of self-worth, identity confusion – all lead them to look for love and belonging in the wrong places. By myself, I am of no help to these struggling youth, but I know with the Holy Spirit’s power, love and authority, I can guide them to a loving heavenly Father who has arms wide open for every one of them. Only through Christ is there hope for this generation and the ones to follow.
We partner with several churches of different denominations during the week by running both junior and senior youth groups.
We offer a bible study for senior youth that want to go deeper in their faith and to study the scriptures.
We send kids to summer camps, and fundraise for those who cannot afford to.
Every Friday night from 7 to 9pm, young people aged 12 to 18 have a safe place to hang out. They have free access to live music, pool tables, air hockey, foosball, board games, video games and more!
We serve hungry students breakfast at an elementary school and high schools. Many young people have come out to youth groups and different functions because of these programs.
Giving young people an opportunity to learn and practice sports such as soccer and ball hockey
